2016-2017 Community Outreach

During the summer of 2016 the Art League Board of Directors accepted the Community Outreach recommendation of chair, Mary Jo Sparrow.  The board voted to dedicate a portion of League fund raising proceeds to the painting of murals for the walls at Food Finders’ new Resource and Education Center, 1204 Greenbush, Lafayette.

This idea was enthusiastically received by Director Katy Bunder and her staff.  The Community Outreach Committee and Food Finders personnel together developed a Request for Proposal that was distributed throughout the artist community with the assistance of Tippecanoe Arts Federation and social media.  The proposal submitted by artist, Linette Bledsoe of Indianapolis was accepted.

Now, two inspirational murals that support the theme “fighting hunger, giving hope” can be enjoyed by all who visit the Welcoming Room at the Food Resource and Education Center.

The Art League commissioned Temre Stanchfield, a local artist, to paint a vining mural inside the entry and up the staircase to the second floor in the new YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter. This Community Outreach project will provide beauty and calmness for the women and children who are housed in the shelter located at 604 Sixth Street, in the Oppenheimer House. The new shelter  opened in April, 2016.

Mural Project at LARA

Fall 2012 the Art League decided to dedicate a portion of their fund raising proceeds to a community outreach project. After learning of a need at LARA (Lafayette Adult Resource Academy), the Art League offered to sponsor a painting on a LARA entryway wall. This idea was enthusiastically received by LARA Director, Trish Maxwell. A committee, chaired by Mary Jo Sparrow, wrote a request for proposals which was sent to area artists by TAF.

The committee selected the design and the positive messages included in the proposal submitted by artist, Sunny Miller. Sunny turned her ideas into a finished painting during the fall of 2013.

In 2014 a second proposal was submitted to the Art League by Sunny Miller, with support from Trish Maxwell. This proposed mural for the LARA cafeteria was approved summer, 2014. Work on the mural has been completed and was shared with Art League members and the community in April, 2015.
